5月12日下午2：28分四川汶川县发生了7.8级的大地震，目前死亡人数已经超过万人大关，党中央、国务院和当地政府正在指挥和组织各方进行现场抢救和灾后重建，也希望海内外中华儿女伸出援助之手，支援震区同胞战胜这场特别重大的地震灾害。
具体捐助方式:
1、通过中国红十字总会专用帐号和热线，请登陆中国红十字总会网站：http://www.redcross.org.cn；

2、通过中国驻旧金山总领馆向国内有关部门转交灾区,支票请写：Chinese Consulate in San Francisco,在备注栏可写：The Donation for 5.12 Sichuan 可以将支票转给ACSS 执委会成员转交.

Just choose "China Earthquake" when you donate. It will also give you receipt for tax purpose. Please also check with your employer whether they will match your donation. (Ask your HR about 501(c) and donation matching).
This Mercy Corps is NGO which is credible, please see their wiki if you have concerns.

如果大家通过中国红十字会的网上捐款通不过，还可以通过香港红十字会捐款，接受美国的isa和mastercard的信用卡，没有额外的手续费。

i know i've said that mercy corps's 89% efficiency is not high for nonprofit, but apparently western union is going to match donations up to $250k. if that's the case, we should donate some through there.

How do we donate through HK red cross via visa? Fill up the form?

Honestly i trust HK red cross more... after a short "lesson" given by my friend saying only a small percentage of the donation would really go to where they belong to.

for any nonprofit, you have to look at the statement regarding how much of the donated money actually goes towards the effort. mercy corp is at 89%. i believe red cross is usually in the low to mid 90s.
