UAW again... 不要签这个字 摘自 加州大学论坛旧版 (Universities in California Bulletin Board System) duan 2008-05-19 13:31 i just want to warn everyone that UAW (united auto workers) are trying to organize UC postdocs again. do NOT sign until you understand what you are doing. basically, they want to organize an union and collect membership fees from us. since the auto industry went bust, they have been starving for membership dues. don't believe there is no fee. it'll be at least $35+/month. they have no concrete plan of collective bargaining and only interested in our money. you want to know where your money would go? lobbyists on the capital hill trying to defend the auto industry! once you sign the card, you agree for them to represent you in bargaining with the university. it's very unlikely they can provide any benefit. for example, if your PI runs out of money, you have to leave, no matter what you or any union wants. they've already tried this about 2 years ago. we defeated them. but they are here again! BE WARNED!!! p.s. i forgot to say that they are targeting mostly foreign postdocs. you ask why? because most of them don't know what's going on and too busy to find out. 完全同意"duan"的观点, 汽车联合会和我们有何相干??!!请大家不要签这个字, 并且尽可能告诉所有的人不要签. 这些人只想收钱, 记得去年有人问他们如何帮我们涨工资, 他们说让我们选代表自己去谈, 收钱敛财是他们唯一的工作.在让你签字时, 他们不会告诉你这个协会给你带来任何实质性的benifit, 你只要一问他们, 他们就支支吾吾了.---Chunhua

Another wornin... 摘自 加州大学论坛旧版 (Universities in California Bulletin Board System) chunhua 2008-05-19 14:08 Another worning from EMaillist: Fellow postdocs, The UAW folks are up to the same bad behavior today. My coworker was approached while conducting experiments and asked to "sign the form for improving post-doc benefits". There was no explanation that it was even a unionization effort or that signing the form was casting a vote for the unionization. They also seem once again to be targeting international postdocs specifically, since they skipped right by every postdoc in our group with an "american" sounding name. I want to second Wiebke's statement, inform yourself on the unionization and know what you are signing. If the union acquires a sufficient number of signatures, there will be no vote other than the form they are asking you to sign and all postdocs will have to pay union dues whether you signed the form or not. I too will hopefully be leaving UCSF this year, but I wish you luck as well. Thanks. Another Warning 摘自 加州大学论坛旧版 (Universities in California Bulletin Board System) chunhua 2008-05-19 14:11 This afternoon two representatives visited our lab area with the same results - they targeted postdocs with obviously foreign sounding names and ignored the rest. In addition, my impression was that these two representatives (UC Riverside postdocs) were also being disingenuous in not fully disclosing the meaning behind a signature (i.e. that by signing you supported unionization and all that it entails). Not trying to start a debate about unionization - just want to reiterate the point to all that you should make the effort to be FULLY informed about the consequences of signing anything for these unionization reps.
