These duties are performed to the highest possible standards of excellence, transparency and compliance with all external regulations, accounting and financial management standards and internal policies and procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Perform all duties as assigned in a timely, accurate and professional manner. Respond to all clients and users of financial information with the highest level of service. Work as a member of the financial team. Responsible for accurate and timely processing weekly, semi-monthly and special payrolls, including all functions necessary to ensure payroll is done to the highest level of accuracy and in compliance with internal policies, procedures and government regulations. Working with the Human Resource Department, the Controller and Chief Financial Officer, assure the organization is in compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations and guidelines to maintain the highest integrity of the payroll process. Approval of check requests prepared by Staff Accountant for payments of deductions withheld from employee checks including union dues and garnishments; other miscellaneous payments, including music director payments and extra musician pension payments. Maintain vacation and sick leave accruals, including input and review of accrual rates and monthly reporting. Review and ensure that payments are being processed correctly for employee disability and leave of absence. Review and monitor payroll tax information and returns. Review and reconcile quarterly tax returns to ensure accuracy and timely preparation by ADP. Review year-end W-2’s and ensure accurate and timely preparation by ADP. With the assistance of the Staff Accountant, assure reconciliation of certain payroll liability accounts in the general ledger is completed in an accurate and timely manner. Working with the Staff Accountant, assure all payroll activity is posted to the general ledger timely and accurately. Provide information and reports to support the needs of the organization and employees, including annual accruals, tax return information, and TSA reports, as well as the needs of outside agencies. Stay current with State & Federal employment law regulations, including FLSA regulations. Implement the written fiscal policies established by the San Francisco Symphony relating to payroll, accounting, tax, audit, and risk management functions of the organization; and advise the Controller on recommended changes in these policies and practices. Lead workers’ compensation and EDD audits. Ensure payroll deduction goals are met by year-end. Ensure consistent payroll file system for compliance, recordkeeping and retention. Preparation of various payroll related audit schedules. Preparation of data for annual form 990 filing. Perform related duties as assigned by the Controller. QUALIFICATIONS 5+ years of payroll management experience required including multi-state payroll experience. Experience processing union payroll is very desirable. BA/BS degree in accounting, business or related field preferred. Experience in ADP, Reportsmith and Excel required. Ceridian experience highly desired. Certified Payroll Professional certification highly desired. Strong mathematical and analytical skills. Outstanding communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines. Excellent attention to detail.
